Like it or otherwise not, today's trucks and cars are assembled in plants across the globe, irrespective of name brand or badge. Those global assembly plants get parts using plants in other parts of the earth, producing your chosen ride — whether Volvo, Hyundai or Chevrolet — as an amalgam of international pieces. Some recent comments on autoweek.com have revealed there's still a considerable amount of confusion in what "American" vehicles are actually manufactured in America, and then we threw together an index of some commonly confused models.

Without wading into arguments for the pluses and minuses of production outsourcing or international trade deals, what's notable is the fact every model about this list — at the least those who are working production for a while (we'll reserve judgment over the Ford EcoSport) has proven to become as safe and reliable as the vehicles that aren't in this particular list. Put simply, wherever your car or truck was built, you may be reasonably assured it was actually built well.

Before you scoff in a Chinese-built Buick, keep in mind this: If this weren't to the brand's Chinese success, Buick may have been dumped together with Pontiac, Hummer and Saturn during GM's bankruptcy.
